more about each amino acid, such as its funcÂ±on in the body and its combinaÂ±on with other amino acids
to form proteins.

Refer to the TORCH category of diseases (page 149 in your textbook) and consult the Internet to determine
the causaÂ±ve agent in each case, the symptoms, and the frequency with which each might occur as an
infecÂ±on during pregnancy.

What are the risks to
the fetus when the father has sickle cell anemia? What are the risks to the fetus when the mother has
sickle cell anemia?
When the father has sickle cell anemia, the fetus is at risk for transmission of the
defecÂ±ve gene and may be a carrier or actually have the disease depending on the genotype. When the
mother has sickle cell the fetus is at risk for more complicaÂ±ons related to sickle cell disease, which can
lead hypoxia or even death of the fetus.
Refer to Table 6.2 on page 141 of your textbook. Consult the Internet to Fnd addiÂ±onal disorders that have
known treatments and note the pathology in each case.

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder. CloÂ²ng factors in the blood may be missing or reduced
due to a defect in the factor VIII gene causing problems related to impaired blood cloÂ²ng and
ManifestaTons are related to the sites of bleeding. Â³he main problem for people with hemophilia is
bleeding internally, mainly into muscles and joints causing pain and anemia. SuperFcial bleeding is
evident by bruising and hematoma.
