Due Date: Wednesday, July 5, 2017
This project will give you the opportunity to apply the analysis methods of descriptive statistics to sets of data.
You will also collect data, analyze data, and write a project report.
Spelling, grammar, and the overall quality
of your written work will be taken into account for your grade.
Complete the following:
1. In paragraph form, describe your topic.
You may choose any topic you wish as long as it involves
two
different quantitative variables
that you believe may be related in some way.
You may not use age for
one of the two quantitative variables.
Identify the relevant population related to your topic, and identify the type of relationship you believe might
exist between the two variables (i.e. positive or negative correlation).
Next, obtain data in order to address your topic.
Collect a samples of paired data where the sample size ( n )
is 40 or more.
For example, if you were interested in how work affects students’ grades, you could collect
the GPA and the number of work hours for 40 students.
You must obtain your data by conducting a
survey or by observation
.
In paragraph form, describe how you obtained your data, including the phrasing
of the questions you asked and how you conducted your poll (e.g. asked friends, family, coworkers, etc.).
Finally, include a list of the paired values in your project report.
Pictures of data are not acceptable.
2. You will first analyze each variable separately.
Treat the numbers you collected as two separate samples
and calculate the following
for each variable
.
a. Calculate the mean, median, and mode.
b. Create a frequency distribution table.
Include both relative and cumulative frequencies.
c. Calculate the range and then use the Range Rule of Thumb to estimate the standard deviation.
d. Calculate the standard deviation and the variance from the original data.
e. Calculate the 5 number summary.
f. Create a boxplot for the data.
g. Assume that the data is bell-shaped.
Use the mean and standard deviation to find the limits for
68%, 95%, and 99.7% of the data.
3. Now you will analyze the paired data to explore their relationship if one exists.
a. Create a scatter diagram for the paired data.
b. Calculate the correlation coefficient.
4. In paragraph form, summarize what you have found and write your conclusions based on the analyses you
have performed.
Be sure to address whether or not the paired data analysis supports the type of relationship
you proposed in your topic description.
You will submit an electronic copy of your report.
Electronic submissions must be submitted through Black
Board and must be a single Excel file.
YOUR EXCEL FILE MUST BE FORMATTED FOR PRINTING.
Sharing data or working in groups is NOT allowed.
Late reports will be penalized 15 points initially, then an
additional 10 points each day beyond the due date.
